Karel Van Beek (°Turnhout 05/07/1954) created his first work in 1972. His focus was on experimental sculpting and assembly art with wood, textile and various materials.
Van Beek was looking for his own sculptural language through informal and non-figurative methods. The selection of paintings from his initial period gives a clear idea of that search for his own style. His awareness of this conscious quest is illustrated by the fact that his paintings were experimental in their incorporation of extra-pictorial elements, such as furniture components, scrap wood, ropes, pillows, clay, etc.
This wonderful collection delineates the work and personality of the artist. It serves to illustrate the fact that Van Beek is an exceptional artist who built an oeuvre in a completely personal way mostly using discarded materials and a vivid imagination to give those items a second life.
